International Water Week to Be Held in Tashkent
In March next year, Tashkent will host the International Water Week. The forum will bring together representatives of countries in the region and international organizations to discuss the rational use of water resources and the implementation of “green” technologies.
This was reported to President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on December 15. The Head of State instructed that the event be organized at a high level and emphasized the need for thorough preparation for the international forum on water-saving technologies in the Aral Sea region, which will also take place next year.
The meeting also addressed measures to reduce energy consumption in the water management sector. In Karakalpakstan, 274 pumping stations are in operation, irrigating more than 185,000 hectares of land. More than half of the pumps are outdated and consume two to three times more electricity than modern equipment.
After replacing one pump in the Kegeyli district, electricity consumption was reduced by half. It is now planned to gradually replace 276 pumps with energy-efficient ones. This will allow annual savings of about 25 billion soums, with the project expected to pay back within 14 months. The authorities emphasized the importance of supporting local manufacturers.
Information was also presented on the Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers. The university currently has 8,682 students and 571 faculty members. It ranks first in Uzbekistan in the THE World University Rankings 2026 and is among the world’s top 500 universities.
In the future, the university plans to establish a digital platform for climate change analysis, expand the use of satellite data, and launch an internationally recognized master’s program in “Water Diplomacy.”
