Uzbekistan joined the World Bank`s Water Security for 1 Billion People Initiative
On April 15 in Washington, the World Bank Group (WBG), in collaboration with development partners, launched the Water Forward Initiative, a global platform aimed at achieving water security for 1 billion people by 2030. UzNews.uz was informed about this by the WB representative office.
The event was attended by WBG President Ajay Banga and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, as well as heads of partner international financial institutions (IFIs) and representatives of various states, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance of Uzbekistan Jamshid Kuchkarov.
During the launch event of the Water Forward initiative, the first group of 14 countries announced their accession to the initiative based on the developed national water pacts. These include Uzbekistan, Albania, Angola, Bolivia, Vietnam, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Jordan, Cambodia, Cameroon, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Jamaica.
It is noted that the Water Forward initiative will assist in reforms in the water sector and modernization of water infrastructure to improve the reliability of services for the population, food production and strengthen the resilience of water systems to droughts and floods. Such projects will help improve living conditions, create jobs and economic growth.
Through its own operations, the WBG is committed to ensuring water security for 400 million people worldwide by 2030. This includes expanding access to water and sanitation services, improving access to irrigation systems and services, measures to protect against droughts and floods, and restoring water sources in developing countries.
With additional commitments from partners, the Water Forward initiative aims to reach more than 1 billion people.
At the heart of the Water Forward initiative are national water pacts developed under the leadership of participating governments. They define priorities for water sector reforms and attract financial resources for their implementation in coordination with international partners.
